A lot of people want me to go color because I do so much charcoal but I love it and the contrast I can do with it.
I usually use Bristol paper by Strathmore. I've been trying different ones but I like how firm that paper is and how white/texture. A lot of Charcoal papers seem to be offwhite or have a yellow tinge which I hate. They are also very thin. Pencils I use General's brand, mostly Med and soft along with a big chunk of charcoal.

I just bought a few sticks of Nitram it's a lot like a cross between compressed and vine. each of the grades hard med and soft have a texture of their own as they go down on charcoal paper. on Bristol it's another thing.... my touch is a little light for bristol I've tried it but it isn't my style so much. i have a tendency to get too tight so I started out using charcoals to loosen up a little.

Mostly I've been exploring toned paper ---I find it really boosts the charcoals range of values which is pretty good anyway.

good luck and keep drawing
dr

So your liking toned better? I like Bristol because of the high contrast I can get from the deep darks and the lights. I was told just recently that my style was too tight, and that this fall (first drawing class) they will teach me to be a little looser. We will see :)
